What Can You Do with WordsLex?
WordsLex allows you to filter words using several different criteria. Instead of manually browsing through long word lists, you can enter your search conditions and narrow down the results to match your needs.
Key features include:
- Search by word length: Choose the number of characters in the word you are looking for.
- Include specific characters: Find words that contain the characters you enter.
- Exclude characters: Remove results that contain any of the characters you want to avoid.
- Set character positions: Specify where a particular character must appear in a word.
- Combine multiple filters: Apply several conditions at once to narrow down the possible results.
- Browse words alphabetically: Explore words throughout the available word lists in alphabetical order.
These features help you search more precisely and find words that match your requirements.
How Does Character-Based Searching Work?
One important feature of WordsLex is that it works with individual characters rather than letters as defined by the spelling rules of each language.
This distinction matters in languages where two or more characters can represent a single letter.
In Hungarian, examples include cs, dz, dzs, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, and zs. Under Hungarian spelling conventions, these are considered individual letters, even though they consist of multiple characters.
Similar examples exist in other languages:
- Slovak:
chis treated as a separate letter in the Slovak alphabet. - Czech:
chis traditionally treated as a separate letter in the Czech alphabet. - Welsh: combinations such as
ch,dd,ff,ll,ng,ph,rh, andthare treated as individual letters in the Welsh alphabet. - Spanish:
chandllwere historically considered separate letters, but they are no longer classified as independent letters of the Spanish alphabet.
WordsLex does not combine these character sequences into single units. Each character is handled separately.
For example:
- In WordsLex, the Hungarian combination
gyconsists of two characters:gandy. - The combination
szconsists of two characters:sandz. - The combination
dzsconsists of three characters:d,z, ands.
When filtering by word length or character position, WordsLex counts and processes individual characters. You cannot select the Hungarian gy as one single letter in the search tool; instead, you can filter for g and y separately.
Important: The word length displayed or used by WordsLex may therefore differ from the number of letters counted according to the spelling conventions of a particular language.

WordsLex is designed for anyone who searches for words, explores vocabulary, or works with language.
It can be particularly useful for:

A Growing Word Database
WordsLex uses multiple word databases to support a broad range of searches. In addition to everyday English vocabulary, the word lists may include abbreviations, specialist terminology, and chemical terms.
The English word database is available, while the Hungarian database is still being expanded. Additional languages and word lists are also planned.
Our goal is to build a versatile word finder that can help people discover and search for words across different languages.
